Silent Night!
Silent Night was first written as a poem in 1816 by an Austrian priest called Joseph Mohr. He called it Stille Nacht in his native German.
When, on Christmas Eve in 1818, the organ in the Church of St, Nicholas in the small alpine village called Oberndorf broke down Joseph Mohr gave the poem of Silent Night to his friend Franz Xavier Gruber, asking him to compose a simple melody that could be played on a guitar. With that in mind, Gruber composed the beautifully simple and timesless tune that we know so well today.
It is no exaggeration to say that out of a musical malfunction was born the most popular and famous Christmas carol of all time. Christmas just wouldn't be the same without the haunting refrain of Silent Night.
Silent Night! - Lyrics
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth"
