O Come All Ye Faithful!
Many claims have been made for the authorship of the original Latin text of the hym that later became O Come All Ye Faithful. Some claim it may originate as early as the 13th-Century, but scholars are now coming to believe that it was probably written by Englishman John Wade in around 1743.
In its Latin form it is called 'Adeste Fideles'.
The music that we now know so well to O Come All Ye Faithful was composed by fellow Englishman John Reading in the early 1700s, and was first published in a collection known as 'Cantus Diversi' in 1751.
The English language version that we sing to this day was supposedly translated by Rev. Frederick Oakley in 1841.
