Hark the Herald Angels Sing!
When Charles Wesley, the brother of the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, wrote the Christmas carol 'Hark the herald angels sing' in 1739, the music he had in mind for it was slow and sombre. It was sung that way for over 100 years until English musician William H. Cummings adapted a cantata written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840 to give us the familar tune we love today.
