Speaking of Xmas - for a long time I found what I thought was a modern abbreviation to be a little offensive. But then I learned that the early Christians used the letter 'X' to symbolise Christ (X is the Greek letter for the sound 'ch') and so rahter than being a crasse moderm abbreviation, Xmas is, in fact a perfectly legitimate was to say Christ's Mass. You live and learn!
